Webmaster to Ogal:

William Kidd (1796-1863) still life painter influenced by David Wilkie (1785-1841 - most successful artist of his time) and was a pupil of James Howe, William Bonner (1800-1853) William Simson (1800-1847) Walter Geikie (1795-1873).

Wilkie had an interest in Both the Burns-inspiring poet (Robert Ferguson) and Robert Burns and painted on subjects of both poets, but could not have been a friend of Burns as he was born in the same year as Burns died. Anyone let us know of any paintings. Email

See also T. Tompkins post below regarding tutors of Kidd.

Default William Kidd a Pupil of Geikie?

Cliff,

First a small correction. You say that Walter Geikie died in 1873. By 1873, Geikie had been dead for 36 years. He caught a fever and died within a week at the young age of 42.

Secondly, I should be grateful if you would let me know where you got the info that Kidd was a pupil of Geikie's. Where is this recorded?

Many thanks.

Jack

Default William Kidd a Pupil of Geikie?

If you put William Kidd and Walter Geikie together into Google, you get only your earlier reply to Kathleen (Which presumably makes it a Googlewhack a la Dave Gorman!!) Your info therefore doesn't appear to be on the internet. I am interested, because Geikie was both profoundly deaf and lacking verbal speech. He normally communicated by signing or by writing on bits of paper. He would therefore have had difficulties as a teacher except under very particular circumstances. Also, his contemporary and biographer, Thomas Dick Lauder nowhere mentions Geikie having any art pupils or apprentices.

With regards.

Jack

Default Kidd teachers

Hi Cliff,
I am also interested to see your posting stating that Kidd was pupil to Howe, Bonner, Simson and Geikie. I am wondering about the source of this information, not only of Geikie but also Bonner and Simpson. I have seen direct evidence showing that Kidd was a student of Jame Howe and to Gavin Beugo, an Edinburgh house painter and decorator but I have never seen evidenced that he apprenticed to the slightly younger men, Bonner, Simson & Geikie. Perhaps they were contemporary apprentices with Howe or Beugo?

I am attempting to piece together as much of William Kidd's life and works as possible and I had not found this previously.
I would love to hear from anyone interested in Kidd's paintings.

Thanks for your info. I can't recall where I obtained my information from, but it must have been an official source, such as the book 'Scottish Art' or the national art gallery etc. I don't do research my self but try to help where I can.

I will soon spend some moere time on the site again as I will get a few sites up again. It has been a few years sinds I was seriousely busy with the site. But now god made me fall in love again things are looking up!
