I actually have a watercolour by David Small
I actually have a watercolour by David Small, called Old College, High Street (dated 1861). I can only assume that this college is a long since demolished one which was in Glasgow, as I think Small was a Glaswegian. I have been told that there is no such building as the one in the painting. However, the students in the picture are wearing red gowns and mortar boards. I have been informed also that it was only St Andrews University students -- at least at Scottish universites -- who wore red gowns. As I know St Andrews University well, I'd have to say that it's not a St Andrews building: There isn't a High Street in St Andrews!
I'd like to know if there's a High Street in Glasgow, especially if it's near the University. Perhaps you know?
I know an art dealer in Perthshire -- L. Christie Campbell at Rait Antiques -- who occasionallysells Small's paintings. And I recently saw one in a gallery in Market Street in St. Andrews.
I don't know if that's any help.
Martin Horan.
